Elsewedy Electric E&C Joins ENR’s Top 250 International Contractors as Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project Wins Global Best Project Award

The Engineering & Construction (E&C) Sector of Elsewedy Electric has been ranked #66 on Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) 2026 Top 250 International Contractors and #159 on its Top 250 Global Contractors, joining both lists for the first time. In the same year, Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) in Tanzania has been named Best Project in the Power/Industrial category of ENR’s 2026 Global Best Projects.

ENR is one of the construction industry’s most respected global authorities. Its annual Top 250 International Contractors ranking is based on construction revenue earned outside each company’s home country. Elsewedy Electric submitted as an Egyptian company, so its ranking reflects only the work of its E&C Sector beyond Egypt’s borders, across Africa, Asia, the Gulf and Europe. This places the company among the world’s leading international contractors.

The 2,115 MW JNHPP, on the Rufiji River, is the largest power project in Tanzania’s history and a landmark of the partnership between Egypt and Tanzania. It was built for the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) by a joint venture of The Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, and was inaugurated in August 2026. ENR’s judges selected 32 winners, across different categories, from 111 submissions across 21 countries, evaluating safety, innovation, teamwork and quality.

“We have never measured a market by its challenges, but by the value we can create for its people and its economy,” said Wael Hamdy, Senior Vice President of Elsewedy Electric and CEO of its E&C Sector. “These recognitions belong to our people, the teams who deliver across borders and in demanding environments every day, and to the clients and partners who trust us to deliver.”

In its 2026 Top 250 coverage, ENR also featured Elsewedy Electric’s work on Rabigh Combined Cycle Power Plant in Saudi Arabia, delivered in consortium with Siemens Energy. The simple-cycle phase was completed 11 months from award, ahead of peak summer demand. When the combined-cycle phase is complete, the more than $1 billion plant will generate 1,200 MW, enough to supply nearly 600,000 homes.
ENR will profile all Global Best Projects winners in its December 14 issue, which also names the Global Project of the Year.
