Egyptian, Iranian Foreign Ministers Discuss De-escalation and Resumption of Diplomatic Efforts

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdelatty met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday, 17 October 2026, on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Baghdad, Iraq.

The meeting focused on regional developments and efforts to reduce tensions, restore calm and promote stability across the region.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Nader Zaki said Abdelatty stressed the urgent need for de-escalation and a swift return to stability. The two ministers discussed ways to reach an agreement that could help contain the ongoing crisis and prevent the conflict from widening.

They also examined prospects for resuming diplomatic efforts to address the crisis, contain its repercussions and prevent further escalation.

Abdelatty underscored the importance of safeguarding freedom of international navigation and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of trade through maritime corridors. He noted that the ongoing crisis had caused significant disruptions to global energy and fertilizer supply chains, as well as international trade, intensifying its economic impact worldwide.

The Egyptian foreign minister further stressed the need to respect the security and stability of Gulf countries and all states across the region. He emphasized the importance of halting hostile actions targeting Saudi Arabia and condemning attacks that threaten regional security and stability.

The meeting forms part of Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to contain regional tensions, promote political solutions and safeguard regional security, while limiting the economic repercussions of crises on international trade and supply chains.
