vivo and ZEISS Bring Classic Lens Aesthetics to Smartphone Portrait Photography in Cairo

vivo and ZEISS showcased the integration of professional optical expertise with smartphone imaging technologies during the vivo × ZEISS Imaging Tech Talk held in Cairo, highlighting how the distinctive aesthetics of classic ZEISS lenses can be recreated through smartphone portrait photography using the vivo V80.

The event explored how optical characteristics, including background bokeh and light rendering, can be translated into accessible creative tools, allowing everyday users and content creators to achieve more distinctive portrait photography.

Bringing ZEISS’s Optical Heritage into Smartphone Photography

Founded in 1846, ZEISS has built a long-standing legacy in professional optics and imaging. Its classic lens designs, including Planar, Sonnar, and Biotar, are recognized for their distinctive optical characteristics, particularly background bokeh, highlight rendering, and the transition between focused and out-of-focus areas.

Since launching their global imaging partnership in 2020, vivo and ZEISS have combined their expertise in professional optics and mobile imaging. Through the vivo ZEISS Imaging Lab, the two companies have continued to explore ways to adapt professional photography technologies for smartphones.

In 2025, the companies renewed and expanded their partnership, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing optical technologies and enhancing smartphone photography experiences.

vivo V80 Introduces Portrait Styles Inspired by Classic ZEISS Lenses

A key highlight of the event was ZEISS Style Bokeh, featured in the vivo V80, which draws inspiration from the distinctive optical characteristics of classic ZEISS lenses and offers users a variety of background bokeh effects.

The Biotar-inspired style creates a distinctive swirling bokeh effect that gives portraits a classic artistic feel, while the Sonnar-inspired style delivers smoother, more natural transitions between the subject and background.

These software-based effects allow users and content creators to select the visual style that best suits their lighting conditions and surroundings, recreating the aesthetics of professional lenses without the need to carry multiple lenses.

The vivo V80 also features a 50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera, alongside two dedicated portrait options: ZEISS 85mm Portrait and ZEISS 100mm Close-Up Portrait.

The 85mm option allows users to capture subjects within their surrounding environment, while the 100mm option focuses more closely on facial expressions and fine details, providing greater flexibility in framing and visual storytelling.

These capabilities give users greater creative control over everyday portrait photography, allowing them to present the same subject and setting in different visual styles through adjustments to composition, lighting, and background bokeh.

Through technical insights and hands-on experiences with the vivo V80, the Cairo Imaging Tech Talk highlighted the growing connection between professional optical technologies and smartphone photography.

By bringing the aesthetics and techniques of classic lenses into mobile imaging, vivo and ZEISS continue to make professional-inspired photography more accessible, enabling users to capture personalities, express emotions, and tell stories through their own creative perspectives.
