October in Malta comes with a little more than Mediterranean sunshine. Think vintage cars racing beneath ancient walls, an entire city staying up for a night of culture, candlelit streets, world-class yachts filling the Grand Harbour, and an evening at the opera in Gozo.
For travellers looking for an autumn escape with plenty happening beyond the usual sightseeing, October might just be the month to put Malta on the calendar. Here are seven events worth planning a trip around.
1. Malta Classic | 1–4 October
For the petrolheads who like their cars with a little history.
Classic motoring is impressive anywhere but put it against the fortified city of Mdina and it becomes something else entirely. Malta Classic brings four days of vintage automotive action, from a hill climb and displays of elegant pre- and post-war cars to the headline Mdina Grand Prix, where classic machines race on the roads beneath the Silent City’s centuries-old walls. Heritage, horsepower and one seriously photogenic backdrop.
2. Notte Bianca | 3 October
For those who would rather discover Valletta after dark.
One night, one historic capital and seemingly something happening around every corner. Notte Bianca turns Valletta into a city-wide celebration of art and culture, with music, dance, performances and activities spilling into its streets and public spaces. Rather than simply visiting Valletta’s landmarks, this is a chance to experience the city itself as part of the show.
3. Jazz… Unplugged at Pjazza Teatru Rjal | 12 October
For anyone whose perfect holiday evening involves good music and an intimate setting.
For something a little more laid-back, head to Pjazza Teatru Rjal — originally the Royal Opera House and now one of Valletta’s most striking open-air cultural spaces — for Jazz… Unplugged, part of the Iljieli fit-Teatru series. The evening brings together Maltese musicians for a stripped-back celebration of jazz in one of the capital’s most distinctive open-air cultural spaces. Intimate, atmospheric and refreshingly unfussy, it is the kind of unexpected night out that can easily become a favourite holiday memory.
4. Rolex Middle Sea Race | 17 October
For sailing fans — or simply anyone who loves a spectacular view.
You do not need to know your port from your starboard to appreciate this one. On 17 October, an international fleet sets off from Malta’s Grand Harbour for the 606-nautical-mile Rolex Middle Sea Race. Watching the yachts gather beneath Valletta’s fortifications before heading out towards Sicily makes the start itself a spectacle — and a particularly memorable way to experience Malta’s deep connection with the Mediterranean.
5. BirguFest | October
For romantics, photographers and anyone who appreciates a little old-world magic.
Few things change the mood of a city quite like switching off the lights. BirguFest’s much-loved candlelight tradition sees the historic streets of Birgu illuminated by thousands of candles and traditional lamps, transforming its narrow lanes and centuries-old architecture after sunset. Add the waterfront and imposing Fort St Angelo to the scene, and this is Malta at perhaps its most atmospheric. The 2026 dates are still to be confirmed.
7. La Traviata in Gozo | 17 October
For culture lovers ready to make an evening of it.
If opera is more your tempo, hop across to Gozo. Verdi’s La Traviata takes over Teatru tal-Opra Aurora in Victoria for a special production marking the opera house’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Performed in Italian with English subtitles, it is as much an excuse to experience Gozo’s distinctive cultural character as it is a night at the opera.
6. The Three Palaces Festival | 28 October–1 November
For those who believe the setting should be every bit as memorable as the performance.
Why settle for an ordinary concert hall when Malta has palaces? The Three Palaces Festival takes music into some of the islands’ grand historic settings, turning heritage spaces into intimate performance venues. With Malta’s architecture becoming part of the experience, it is a fitting final reason to make October the month for a Maltese escape.
